UWC President Paul Grod met with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and other senior leaders

Zagreb, October 24, 2022 – During the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) mission to Croatia attending the First Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform and Regional Conference of UWC Eastern and Central European countries, UWC President Paul Grod met with Croatian Prime Minister (PM) Andrej Plenković as well as other senior international government leaders and legislators.

During the meeting Paul Grod thanked PM Plenković for his personal commitment and strong leadership on the global stage in support of Ukraine.  PM Plenković was awarded in 2018 with the Ukrainian World Congress’ highest recognition, the St. Volodymyr Medal, for his support of Ukraine. The UWC delegation also met with Croatia’s Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić-Radman and the Chair of the Croatia Ukraine parliamentary friendship group, MP Ms. Zdravka Busić.

“We are immensely grateful to the Croatian people from them steadfast support of Ukraine.  Ukrainians and Croats are bounded by common history and similar struggle for independence from foreign occupation. Our paths to freedom, independence and Euro-Atlantic community are also quite similar. The Croatian war for independence resembles the current war in Ukraine. Croatia successfully pushed back a much larger adversary, rebuilt their country, and achieved EU and NATO integration. That is why Croats understand Ukrainians better than most, and that is why the Croatian experience is especially important to Ukrainians,” stated Paul Grod, commenting on the outcomes of the official meetings.

During these meetings, the leaders discussed Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration; NATO membership; consolidation of European efforts to counter Russian aggression, disinformation and propaganda; prosecuting Russian war criminals for the atrocities committed in Ukraine by establishing a United Nations War Crimes Tribunal; confiscation of Russia’s assets by adopting appropriate legislation; as well as a number of issues important to the Ukrainian community in Croatia, including adopting legislation in Croatia recognizing Holodomor as a genocide and providing support settlement and care for Ukrainian refugees.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and UWC President Paul Grod joined Croatian, Ukrainian officials and Ukrainian community leaders at the official ceremony of the opening of the Ukrainian House in Zagreb.

“Ukrainians around the world are grateful to Prime Minister Plenković as well as the Government, parliamentarians, and people of Croatia for their significant support to Ukraine as they defend against Russia’s war crimes. We value and will never forget this support! Slava Hrvatskoj! Slava Ukrainiy!” said Paul Grod.
