Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij sent letters to the President of the European Parliament and leaders of the political groups in the European Parliament supporting the nomination of EuroMaidan for the 2014 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is awarded each year by the European Parliament to honour individuals or organisations for their efforts to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms.

One of this year’s three finalists is EuroMaidan represented by journalist Mustafa Nayem, musician and Eurovision winning artist Ruslana Lyzhychko, activist Yelyzaveta Schepetylnykova, and journalist Tetiana Chornovol.

The winner will be decided by the President and leaders of political groups in the European Parliament on 16 October 2014 and the award ceremony will be held in Strasbourg on 26 November 2014.

“Awarding EuroMaidan the 2014 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought would recognize the significance of this movement to furthering democratic principles and European values, demonstrate European solidarity with the people of Ukraine and serve as encouragement as they defend their independence,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
