Life-saving light: UWC delivers generator to hospital just 20 km from the front line

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC)’s Energize Ukraine initiative has delivered a high-capacity generator to Kharkiv City Clinical Hospital No. 17 – a facility located just 15-20 kilometers from the front line that treats patients with severe injuries every day.

The generator was purchased as part of UWC’s winter campaign, Warmth for Ukraine, aimed at supplying critical infrastructure with essential energy equipment.

“This generator is another step toward ensuring that even in frontline regions, doctors can continue their work and patients can receive a chance at life and quality care. I’m grateful to every Ukrainian and every friend of Ukraine around the world who contributed donations this winter,” said Yarema Kovaliv, director of the Energize Ukraine initiative.

Founded in 1912 by Professor Hirshman through charitable donations, the hospital now operates under constant threat. Since the start of the full-scale war, it has never stopped working – despite shelling, building damage, and prolonged power outages.

The hospital provides round-the-clock care to patients from across the region, from children to the elderly. Its ophthalmology department, with up to 270 beds, specializes in complex eye injuries and retinal damage.

Medical Director of Ophthalmology Svitlana Saienko and her team work in conditions where every minute matters.

“Without electricity, we simply cannot operate. We have six to nine operating tables, but due to limited generator capacity, we used to be able to run only one. That meant lost time – and sometimes lost vision,” Saienko said.

At the start of the full-scale invasion, the hospital relied on two low-capacity generators. Doctors performed surgeries using flashlights, lived at the hospital for months, and continued treating patients even when evacuation was impossible.

Despite repeated shelling and damage – including an attack on January 2, 2026 – the hospital never stopped operating.

The new generator now ensures uninterrupted operation of surgical units even during power outages. That means more surgeries – and more lives saved.

“We are deeply grateful. This allows us to keep working and save more people,” Saienko added.

Since 2022, the UWC has procured and delivered more than CAD 10 million worth of energy equipment through the Energize Ukraine initiative, helping hospitals and other critical facilities stay powered.

Hundreds of people from around the world have already joined Energize Ukraine. You can make a targeted individual donation at https://energizeukraine.com. Instructions for making a special bank transfer donation are available at the following link.
