The Ukrainian World Congress mourns the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham. Across more than three decades in public service, Senator Graham was a consistent and effective advocate in the United States Senate for Ukraine’s right to defend itself and to determine its own future.
“Senator Graham understood that Ukraine’s fight is a fight for the principles the free world depends on,” said Paul Grod, President of the Ukrainian World Congress. “He backed that conviction with action for more than a decade: legislation to arm Ukraine, sanctions against the Russian regime, and a refusal to accept the annexation of Ukrainian territory. He held both Republican and Democratic administrations to account on Ukraine, and he did so without wavering.”
Senator Graham visited Ukraine ten times during the war, most recently meeting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on July 10, days before his death. In his final weeks he was working to advance sanctions legislation targeting Russia and its enablers.
“His voice carried weight in Washington and in Kyiv, and the cause he championed does not rest on any single person,” Grod added. “Support for Ukraine in the United States remains bipartisan and broad, and a new generation of leaders stands ready to carry that work forward. The most fitting tribute to Senator Graham is a free and victorious Ukraine, secure within its internationally recognized borders.”
The Ukrainian World Congress extends its deepest condolences to Senator Graham’s family, to his colleagues in the Senate, and to the people of South Carolina, whom he represented for over three decades.
