UWC commemorates 15th anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Georgia

This year marks 15 years since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Georgia. On August 7, 2008, the Kremlin introduced troops into the sovereign Georgian territory under the pretext of supporting its separatist puppet “republics” – Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The war provoked by Russia caused terrible destruction and suffering for the Georgian people.

However, Russia is still trying to shift the blame to Georgia. Propagandists continue to claim that the war began on August 8 with an alleged attack by Georgian forces on the Tskhinvali region. In fact, the Russian Federation has been preparing for the invasion for years – it initiated economic, energy, and military provocations and carried out the first attacks as early as August 1, 2008.

The Ukrainian World Congress calls not to spread Russian propaganda and to unite efforts to restore justice. The advance of the invaders into the territory of Georgia was stopped only at the cost of the heroism of the Georgian defenders. Currently, Ukraine is also protected from the Russian horde by Ukrainian soldiers.

Unfortunately, the West did not hear these words then, did not learn lessons and did not draw conclusions from Moscow’s insidious attack on Georgia. The world’s inadequate response to the actions of the Putin regime only fueled Russia’s imperial appetites. It enabled further Russian aggression in Ukraine, culminating in a full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.

Today, after all the terrible crimes of the Russian occupiers in Ukraine, the entire democratic world is aware of Russia’s anti-human and imperial nature, and Georgian volunteers are fighting side by side with Ukrainian defenders for the freedom and independence of Ukraine. Putin’s regime is absolute evil and must be stopped in Ukraine!

The victory of the civilized world over the Russian horde on Ukrainian soil will be the beginning of liberation from the occupiers and the rest of the region’s countries, including Georgia.
