Brazil’s participation in Peace Summit: Ukrainian delegation meets with Paraná State leadership

The Ukrainian delegation, led by Vitório Sorotiuk, President of the Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation (UBCR), Honorary Consul of Ukraine Mariano Tchaikovsky, and clergy representatives, held discussions with the leadership of the Brazilian state of Paraná. The primary agenda of the meeting included Brazil’s involvement in the Peace Summit scheduled for June in Switzerland.

“Today I received a small Ukrainian delegation led by Honorary Consul of Ukraine Mariano Tchaikovsky and Vitório Sorotiuk, President of the Ukrainian-Brazilian Central Representation, as well as clergy from Ukrainian Christian churches who are on a religious mission in Paraná. Currently, the state is home to about 600,000 Ukrainians and their descendants,” wrote Darci Piana, Vice Governor of Paraná.

Following the meeting, the Legislative Assembly of Paraná decided to send a proposal to the federal government of Brazil to support the Peace Summit. Officials believe that the high-level meeting in Switzerland will help find ways to end the war between Ukraine and Russia, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“The Ukrainian delegation called for the President of the Republic of Brazil to be present in Switzerland to work on the possibility of reaching a peaceful agreement,” said Ademar Traiano, President of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Paraná. I see no difficulty in forwarding this request.”

Representatives of the Ukrainian delegation stated that Brazil is a leader in the region and has influence over other countries in the region. Furthermore, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would like to see Brazil at the Peace Summit.

“I believe that his [the President of Brazil’s] presence there, like any leader of any country in the world who receives invitations, speaks to the fact that these people want peace,” Zelenskyy previously stated.

On May 17th, the Brazilian media reported that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva decided not to participate in the Peace Summit.
