Possible peace negotiations could preserve Ukraine’s territorial integrity while temporarily restricting its sovereignty over certain regions, German diplomat and Munich Security Conference chairman Christoph Heusgen said in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
“If Ukraine is forced to accept a ceasefire under such conditions, it must receive strong security guarantees. This could lead to discussions about deploying the Bundeswehr [Germany’s armed forces] in Ukraine,” Heusgen said.
He emphasized that Europe must take the lead in these efforts.
“In the future, Europe must tackle its security challenges independently. European countries should contribute far more to their continent’s security than they have in the past,” he stated.
At the same time, he warned that military force must not be allowed to override the rule of law, noting that Russia’s war against Ukraine has already caused a “historic rupture” in international norms.
“I won’t speculate on the outcome of ceasefire negotiations, but Germany, as a central European power, must play a leading role,” Heusgen added.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian community in Munich has announced a major pro-Ukraine demonstration during the Munich Security Conference. A Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) delegation, led by President Paul Grod, plans to take part.
