Just one day after it was unveiled, a memorial plaque dedicated to the victims of the Holodomor-genocide was defaced by pro-Russian vandals in Lisbon, Portugal’s capital.
News of the incident was reported by Pavlo Sadokha, Vice-President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) and President of the Union of Ukrainians in Portugal.
“We do not yet know who committed this vandalism, but the way ‘peace’ (PAZ) is written [on a t-shirt covering the plaque] suggests it is the work of Russian terrorists and their supporters in Portugal,” Sadokha stated.
The Union of Ukrainians in Portugal has already filed a police report regarding the crime and plans to appeal to higher officials in Portugal to urge them to take all necessary measures to prevent such acts of vandalism in the future.
“This is a horrific and inhumane act of vandalism, as it concerns the memory of millions of genocide victims targeted by the totalitarian communist regime of Moscow against Ukrainians,” Sadokha emphasized.
The memorial plaque honoring the victims of the 1932-1933 man-made famine orchestrated by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and his henchmen was unveiled on Oct. 24 and Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska attended the ceremony.
