Ukraine’s National Memory Institute offers educational materials for May 8 Remembrance Day

The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory (UINM) has prepared a comprehensive educational set of materials for the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism, observed on May 8.

“This day was established by the Law of Ukraine in 2023 to show solidarity with Europe in commemorating this tragic chapter in human history. The red poppy, a shared symbol of remembrance for the Second World War, is also shared by all,” the UINM said.

The Institute encourages the use of the remembrance poppy during public events and in themed materials. A video tutorial and diagram are available to guide people on how to make their own poppy.

“We remember that war is a catastrophe, a tragedy, with millions of lives lost and countless others devastated. We also recognize that the glorification and romanticization of war only leads to the escalation of new conflicts,” the UINM said.

Users can access key messages, historical background, information about the consequences of World War II, and an explanation of how Moscow has turned victory into a cult through the following link.

The Institute has also released a variety of thematic materials related to the Second World War. These include interactive postcards, video projects, exhibitions, brochures, and books covering different aspects of the war, such as the history of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), the experiences of women during the war, and the demographic losses suffered by Ukraine.

Other resources include a board game, video stories, and teaching materials for educators. The Institute’s website also features infographics, films, and other tools to help the public better understand key events and figures of the war.

All of these materials are available for free through the following link.

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) has declared 9 May as Russian Shame Day and launched a campaign—more details are available at the link.

The UWC also explained the significance of the “Immortal Regiment” march, a propaganda event where participants carry portraits of Soviet soldiers and glorify the USSR’s role in the Second World War.
