Ukrainian World Congress strongly condemns

Russia’s continued encroachment on the territory of Ukraine

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) strongly condemns the statement made by Sergei Glazyev, an advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who, in an interview with the publication Kommersant‑Ukraine on 6 February 2014, threatened Russian intervention to supposedly guarantee the security of Ukraine, which is reminiscent of the Soviet methods of pacifism.

In addition, the advisor to the Russian president is attempting to create a divide between Eastern and Western Ukraine with the unfounded assertion that “ties between the oblasts of Western and Eastern Ukraine are not as strong as the ties between Southeastern Ukraine and Russia.”

The UWC is outraged by such threats to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and Russia’s violation of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances in connection with Ukraine’s accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and other Russian international obligations.

The UWC also condemns the fact that Russia openly encourages today’s governing authorities in Ukraine to engage in brutal force to suppress human rights and freedoms.

“The Ukrainian World Congress calls upon the international community to assertively condemn such reprehensible actions on the part of Russia, to defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and to help resolve the crisis in Ukraine in a peaceful and democratic way,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
