The legendary Presvyata Pokrova Cossack Chaika, a symbol of Ukraine’s rich maritime history, has arrived in London. Hundreds of members of the Ukrainian community, as well as British locals, observed the event, the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) reported.
The vessel arrived in Britain after undergoing 18 months of restoration.
“This remarkable vessel was originally built in Lviv in 1992 as an exact replica of an 18th-century warship, and since has sailed nearly 30,000 nautical miles around Europe, now making its way to the heart of the British capital,” the AUGB said.
The Chaika first visited Britain in the early 1990s and was originally berthed in St. Katherine’s Dock.
Speaking at the ceremonial event were city government officials, the Ukrainian embassy, and British military officials.
“Visitors had a unique opportunity to witness a living symbol of Ukrainian nautical heritage and experience the indomitable spirit of the Cossacks and hear stories about the ship’s historical significance and Ukraine’s maritime identity, accompanied by traditional Cossack cuisine,” the AUGB said.
The AUGB extended a special thanks to their London branch member Marta Mulyak and her family who were “instrumental in bringing the Chaika to this country and its extensive renovation.”
