NATO Parliamentary Assembly calls for Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance

NATO member states must work to accelerate Ukraine’s full membership in the defense Alliance, according to a resolution passed on Nov. 26 during the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s plenary session, as reported by Ukrinform.

The resolution calls on the governments and legislatures of NATO countries to intensify their political and practical efforts to help Ukraine receive an invitation and become NATO’s 33rd member state as soon as possible.

The resolution also stresses the need for the Alliance to increase its military, financial, and humanitarian support for Ukraine, ensuring the timely delivery of ammunition and advanced weapons systems.

“[We urge] to strengthen the sanctions framework against the Russian Federation and the DPRK [North Korea] in order to increase the price for their cooperation in the aggression against Ukraine, and provide Ukraine with all the means, including medium-range missiles, to defend itself and deter further aggression,” the document states.

Furthermore, member states are urged to use political and economic pressure to “deter China from supporting Russia’s military effort.”

Earlier, NATO discussed the need to further enhance military support for Ukraine, especially as Russia has engaged North Korean forces in the conflict.

In June, the UWC launched the #UkraineInNATO advocacy campaign, calling on Ukrainian communities, organizations, and supporters worldwide to rally behind Ukraine’s NATO membership bid.
